AIG Elevator Connect

Context

The ask: design interactive experiences for AIG’s new office in Atlanta

This project reimagines the elevator lobby as a space for interaction and connection, turning waiting time into engaging touchpoints that enhance efficiency and foster connections among employees.

Research

Navigation and decision-making are interconnected processes

When we looked at these insights together, we realized the problem wasn’t just about navigation; it was about decision-making in motion.

Navigation is a decision problem, not a wayfinding problem

Users don’t just need directions, they need to quickly understand what’s available and what to do next.

Time pressure amplifies friction

We saw that most frustration happens during transitions, especially when people are moving between meetings or floors. These are short, high-pressure moments where users don’t have time to explore.

Lack of visibility creates hesitation

Users couldn’t easily find out which spaces were available, what was happening in the building, or who they needed to connect with.
Insights

Meet Sarah: a senior employee who frequently moves between meetings

Her main need is to make fast, informed decisions while navigating the space. She want to quickly navigate, stay informed, and connect with people. Across her goals and pain points, we saw a common theme: lack of clarity in what’s available and what to do next.

User Journey

Overcrowded elevators and unclear navigation led to delays and frustration

Mapping her day, we saw that frustration peaks during transitions—especially when navigating between floors or searching for rooms. These are short, high-pressure moments where users don’t have time to figure things out.

The Problem

Employees struggled to navigate the spacious office efficiently with numerous meeting and collaboration areas

How might we design a workplace awareness system by supporting decision-making in natural transition moments?

Ideation

From wayfinding to workplace awareness system

We shifted our thinking from designing a navigation tool to designing a workplace awareness system—one that supports decision-making in motion.

Solution

01 Instant view, search, and book

Users can easily locate meeting rooms on an interactive map, check availability in real time, and reserve spaces within seconds.

Solution

02 Stay updated on company and local Atlanta events

The system provides updates on company announcements and local Atlanta events, keeping users informed and connected to both workplace and community.

Solution

03 Encourages networking and collaboration across departments

Employees can explore coworker profiles and connect through LinkedIn, encouraging collaboration and networking within the organization.

Impact

Support employees by fostering collaboration, inspiration, and innovation

As a result, the system improves access to space information, supports collaboration, and increases awareness of workplace activity. We also received positive stakeholder feedback on the integration of digital tools within the physical environment.

Reflection

This collaboration made me especially interested in designing systems that support employees in their daily work.

1Workflow experiences are shaped by space, time, and emotion
2Clarity reduces stress and improve decision-making
3Designing for physical spaces requires thinking about visibility, interaction time, and user flow differently compared to traditional digital products
4Aligning multiple stakeholder perspectives to reveal gaps and lead to more creative and innovative solutions
